Podgorica, 2026 – The Museum Society of Montenegro has begun implementing an innovative project titled “Museums for the 21st Century”, aimed at strengthening the professional capacities of museum experts, improving the visibility of museums, and connecting museum institutions across Montenegro. The project, which lasts 12 months, is being carried out in cooperation with partner organizations NVU HOMER and NVU INVICTUS, with the support of the Ministry of Culture and Media.

The goal of the project is to empower the museum community through education, digitization, promotion, and international cooperation. Special attention is given to inclusion – museum content will be adapted for people with disabilities, while young people and local communities will have the opportunity to actively participate in programs and workshops.
The main activities of the project include:
- Improving the website and creating the “Museums of Montenegro” portal with a database of members and available resources.
- Organizing professional workshops and training for museum workers, including work with young people and persons with disabilities.
- Educational workshops in secondary schools in several municipalities, including Podgorica, Pljevlja, Berane, and Rožaje, with the aim of raising awareness about the importance of museums and cultural heritage.
- Networking with regional and international museum experts and institutions.
- Organizing public events, including a roundtable and the celebration of International Museum Day, as well as publishing brochures and publications for both professional and general audiences.
Project coordinator, Dragan Radović, emphasizes that the project offers long-term solutions:
“Our ambition is for museums in Montenegro to become modern, accessible, and relevant spaces for the community. Through education, digital presence, and networking, we want to encourage the professional development of the museum profession and increase the accessibility of cultural heritage to all citizens, including persons with disabilities and younger generations.”
The project is designed to create a sustainable support system for museum activities – the digital content and portal will remain active after the project ends, and the network of professionals, institutions, and partners will lay the foundation for future initiatives and projects in the field of culture and museology.
It is expected that “Museums for the 21st Century” will contribute to greater recognition of museums, strengthening of professional capacities, increased interest among young people in cultural heritage, and the enhancement of inclusivity in cultural institutions across Montenegro.
